EN 17956 Standard for Technical Insulation
Insulation standards in EU countries
In this section, references to insulation standards can be found. Placed by country in the menu options. Most of the standards are commercially available. But standards, published by the national associations, are mostly free. It that case they can immediately be downloaded from this website.
VDI Society Energy and Environment (VDI-GEU)
VDI Society Energy and Environment (VDI-GEU) – FESI – European Federation of Associations of Insulation Contractors
In the VDI Society Energy and Environment (VDI-GEU), the technical committee “Heat and cold protection” has been established in the technical division 1 “Power engineering”. This VDI technical committee is in charge of several VDI-Guidelines for the “Technical Insulation” sector, which are regularly submitted to a query for confirmation or revision. All VDI-Guidelines will be published in German and English language.
Guideline series VDI 2055: “Thermal insulation of heated and refrigerated operational installations”
The Guideline series VDI 2055 consists of three parts. It supports the planning of industrial installations with calculation documents for the design of insulation and provides information on the verification of the guaranteed properties of insulation materials and insulation systems. The chairman of the technical committee is Dipl.-Ing. Roland Schreiner from the Research and Testing Institute for Thermal Insulation (FIW München).
VDI 2055 Part 1: “Thermal insulation of heated and refrigerated operational installations – Calculation rules” (draft edition 2019-08)
The complete revision of Part 1 was completed in 2019. The editorial committee of the VDI has published the draft. The next edition of VDI 2055 Part 1 is expected to be available at the end of 2020.
VDI 2055 Part 2: “Thermal insulation of heated and refrigerated operational installations in the industry and in the building services – Technical basics for the verification of properties of insulating materials” (edition 2013-10)
The revision is planned.
VDI 2055 Part 3: “Thermal insulation of heated and refrigerated operational installations in the industry and in the building services – Technical basics for the verification of thermotechnical properties of insulation systems, determination of total heat losses” (edition 2012-04).
The revision is planned.
Corrigendum concerning guideline VDI 2055 Part 3:2011-10.
Guideline series VDI 4610: “Energy efficiency of industrial installations”
The Guideline series VDI 4610 “Energy efficiency of industrial installations” applies to the heat and cold protection of installations in industry and in technical building equipment. The guideline provides a tool with which the potential for savings in heat and cold losses can be determined and measures for effective insulation can be designed taking ecological and economic aspects into account. The guideline is based on the life cycle assessment of insulation systems and thus supports climate protection measures. The chairwoman of the technical committee is Dipl.-Ing. Karin Wiesemeyer from the Research and Testing Institute for Thermal Insulation (FIW München).
VDI 4610 Part 1: “Energy efficiency of industrial installations – Thermal insulation” (edition 2018-01)
VDI 4610 Part 2: “Energy efficiency of operational installation – Thermal bridges catalogue” (edition 2018-12)
VDI 4610 Part 3: “Energy efficiency of operational installation – Methods for optimizing insulation systems” (edition 2019-08, draft)
The preparation of the new Part 3 is complete. The editorial committee of the VDI has published the draft. The first edition of Guideline VDI 4610 Part 3 is expected to be available at the end of 2020.
FESI supports also the transfor of VDI 4610 into a EU standard. This could be the basis within the EU for the definition of energy classes to push national goverments to the demand of a higher level of insulation in their countries. Information: Gabriel Boncalo, chair of the Thermal Technical Committee.
ISSO publication 64 Insulating quality requirements
The ISSO publication 64 “Insulating quality requirements for non-residential construction” is intended as a reference for material selection and installation of pipe insulation for clients, designers, consultants, installers, insulators and trainers in technical vocational education.
It specifies the minimum requirements to be applied for the prevention of unwanted heat loss, mounting techniques, the prevention of external corrosion and the application of insulation systems (insulation material + finish).
The publication lists the usual insulation and auxiliary materials for distribution pipes of hot and cold water installations and for ventilation systems. The temperature range of the transported media is between 6 ° C and 120 ° C.
The renewed ISSO publication 64 can be found in ISSO Open
CINI insulation standard
The CINI manual is a reference work for anyone professionally involved in insulation in the industry. The book enables insulation companies, industrial companies and consultants to achieve optimum quality of insulation work. The CINI manual is refined and expanded every year. The book is called “Handboek Isolatie voor de Industrie”. CINI is responsible for the compilation and content of the Handbook. Due to international demand, the CINI manual is also available in the English language.
More information can be found on the websites of CINI and the knowledge institute for technical insulation NCTI.
